12x16 plein air oil on linen canvas Signed: Lower left MFlack Completed: Spring 2014
Artist’s Comments:
Destination: Mount Shasta Lavender Farm in Montague, California. Riding spur road A-12 off of Highway 97 my writer-husband and I found this remote hillside lavender farm in Northern California. Quickly canvassing the beautiful Spanish style gift shop and courtyard fountain I was eager to set up my easel to paint the lavender fields while my husband opened his computer to write. Such a wide expanse of sky on the sloping hillside and the ultimate privacy of the fields of lavender set a creative stage for us together.
To quote the Winslows, who carved out these 11 acres of lavender, beginning in 2001:
“…the views of Mt. Shasta are as intoxicating as the fragrance from the purple fields.”
The contrast of the 14,000-foot snow covered peak with the 55,000 lavender plants lined up in straight rows bursting with blooms and fragrance sent peace and awe into our souls. I reached out with brush and palette to capture this fragrant, sun-lit moment.
